Be Prepared To Go Back to School

by Caroline Moassessi, FAACT Vice President of Community Relations

Back-to-school time can feel overwhelming and sometimes scary. Please know you are not alone. A strong community is here to support you and your students. Need to understand your students’ rights? No problem—we got you! Seeking ideas for classroom parties? We have ideas! Looking to engage with fellow parents/caregivers of high school or college students? We host a private Facebook group that offers a safe space for sharing experiences and learning from each other.

Let's explore a few FAACT back-to-school resources created just for you!

Accommodations: First and foremost, establishing accommodations as quickly as possible is critical. Visit the Accommodations Center for information about accommodations in school (Section 504 Plans and USDA Regulations) and how these can support your student.

Civil Rights: FAACT’s Civil Rights Advocacy Center provides information about your student’s civil rights and protections that are in place. You will also find additional information about 504 Plans, IDEA, IHP, IHCP, USDA Guidelines, and Commonly Asked Questions. If you are short on time, FAACT offers a variety of back-to-school podcasts featuring General Counsel Amelia Smith, JD, leading allergists, and experienced parents/caregivers.

Preschool and Elementary School: FAACT's Planning for School: A Parent/Caregiver Guide is designed to help you navigate the challenges of managing your child's food allergies in a school environment. We compiled tips and resources to help you create a safe and healthy environment for your child while they are in the care of others. Explore school party and non-food ideas on FAACT’s Pinterest Page.

Food Allergy Information for Schools: Check out FAACT’s Food Allergies and School Center to access FAACT’s Food Allergy Curricula for Schools, a Lunchroom Poster that can help raise awareness among students, and School Personnel Resources that can guide teachers and staff in managing food allergies, to name a few vital elements.

College: Facing the college process while managing food allergies can feel daunting. FAACT is here to walk this journey with you! We invite parents/caregivers and students to explore these resources, including checklists, articles, and podcasts, to help you stay in the know and feel confident about the adventure that is about to unfold. In creating this resource, FAACT interviewed college students – both students with food allergies and some without – plus college professors, food service personnel, attorneys, mental health professionals, and parents of college students.

Get Social: Feeling connected and learning from people who understand your life is priceless. Find FAACT-recognized local support groups or join an online group, like FAACT's Facebook Group for the Parents/Caregivers of High School and College Students with Food Allergies. Listen and share with an open mind but consult with a medical professional before making any changes to your health care, school, or other food allergy plans.

Please share FAACT resources with your schools and take advantage of our free downloads and guides. Wishing your family the best school year ever!
