Food-Free Mother's Day

Food-Free Mother's Day

by Tracy Bush, Nutrimom - Food Allergy Liaison

Mother’s Day - the single day of the year when mom should be spoiled, pampered, fussed over and made to feel as if her feet should not touch the ground. All mothers love to feel treasured but what happens when your mom is the one with allergies? Finding the perfect tokens of appreciation can be tricky enough but add in allergies and one slip can mean a day she will remember but not in the way you may have hoped.

No Flowers for Mom
Sometimes the worst thing that you could do is bring mom some flowers and then find out that they set off her allergies.  The idea is to watch your mother’s eyes tear up because of shear happiness, not from the bouquet that you set down in front of her. Instead, take the safe route and make flowers that she can have all year long. The upside- no watering is needed and even Dad can help you create these masterpieces that he can also use for another day.

Creativity Always Wins
I will let you all in on a little secret- all mothers cherish the gifts that are given to her but the best gifts are those that come from creativity. Can you buy her something adorable from a store? Of course, but gifts that began in your heart truly makes a mom swoon. Not only does it show her that you took a little extra time and effort to make her a unique gift but it also reinforces that stubborn mom worry that we (may) not be doing our jobs as well as we hope too. It’s a tiny reminder that when mom doesn’t think you are listening, you really are and then some.

Show Mama Some Love
Smother her with hugs, kisses, tickles and anything else that will just fill her heart to the brim. Remember to do this as you get older too because when you begin to grow up, mom’s heart begins to miss all of those extra loving moments. Make Mother’s Day the best day of the year, but then give her something that will go beyond just a single day. With a simple jar, some paper and yarn you can create a month full of ways to remind her each day why you love her. Nothing starts each day better than personal notes and written cuddles.

Destress Her
Let’s face it, all mothers have stress upon stress. Your feet contain 15,000 nerves! Did you know that your feet have certain pressure points and a foot rub can actually relieve much of that stress for her? It may seem like a lot of stress to calm but studies show that using reflexology helps to reset our brain and stills our worries. So have your mom sit, grab her feet and watch her melt into the peaceful mom that you all know and love.

Recipe for Love
When in doubt, create a recipe that is food-free. Make a custom-tailored book mark for mom or design a recipe card just for her. The recipe can be a pinch of this, a dab of that and measurements of actions (like use 4 hugs and add 2 kisses). Whichever way you put your recipe together, it’s sure to win mom over for the entire day and any time that she looks at it. Simple affection can be the single most smile producer.

Wishing everyone a safe, happy and healthy Mother’s Day for this year and the years ahead.
